The only official licence plates are issued by the Traffic Department - Commissioner Khasu

The Traffic Department is the only body regulated to produce vehicle licence plates in the country and the use of any other licence plates by locally registered vehicles, especially those without the Mokorotlo symbol, is illegal.

Traffic Commissioner, Mr. Tlali Khasu commenting on the increasing use of hardened plastic number plates, said according to the Road Traffic Act of 1991, the Traffic Department was the only body mandated to produce the plates. The Department had issued a general warning on April 19, this year against the use of the unauthorized vehicle plates.

The Department was yet to determine where these illegal plates were being made from, the Commissioner said, issuing a strong warning that owners of the plate factory will be prosecuted.

The controversial plates are made of a hard plastic material as opposed to the official ones which are made out of aluminum.
