The National Adaptation Plan of Action (NAPA), a Lesotho meteorological Services project intended to create awareness on adaptation to climate change will be brought into being in February, Director of Meteorological Services, Mr.Ts'eliso Sekoli has announced. Interviewed by the Lesotho News Agency (LENA) on January 15, Mr. Sekoli said awareness about the changing climate can help people to adapt to the changes so that they know when to save water as well as the kinds of crops that can be planted without much dependence on rain. The project will also focus on the building of dams for water collection; recycling of water, especially by factories; the continuing soil erosion and strategies to be adapted to prevent it. The project is funded by the Global Environment Facility to a tune of M1.2 million. The LMS has also announced that it is to upgrade the weather programme on Lesotho Television. New equipment will be installed and training on its operation is going on which will enable images of both the weather presenter as well as the various parts of the country to be visible to viewers. Presenters are already undergoing training in Mbabane, Swaziland, under a programme being run by the British Meteorological Office that started on January 12 and ends on January 23, for five selected African countries, he said. 15 January 2004 |
