Mohale's Hoek out to control locust outbreaks

Farmers in the Mohale's Hoek district have been asked to report unusual locust movements  so that control measures can be taken as soon as is possible.

The Mohale's Hoek District Agricultural Officer, Mr. Ntitia Tuoane, said in an interview with the Lesotho News Agency (LENA) that since several places in the country have had these attacks, it was important that control measures are taken before any further damage to crops.

Locusts occur naturally but can sometimes be seen in swarms attacking leafy plants and fruit trees during the dry season, Mr. Tuoane said, announcing that the Department of Agriculture has initiated spraying campaigns where the outbreaks have been reported.

The first outbreak in the Mohale's Hoek district was reported at Mokhopha in December where after concerted efforts, the outbreak seems to have abated. Other affected places include Ketane, Ha Ts'epo and Qalakheng, he said.
