| Half the Diabetic Population Don't Know They Have It | |
| Fifty
percent of the 194 million people with diabetes worldwide are unaware of
their condition, according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF),
World Health Organisation (WHO) Representative, Dr. Angela Benson, has told
a World Diabetes day celebration in Mohale's Hoek..
Diabetes is the leading cause of death, through heart attacks and strokes. It is also the leading cause of blindness and kidney failure in developed countries. The 194 million figure is projected to rise to 330 million by 2025. Dr. Benson identified obesity as the main modifiable risk factor for type two diabetes, adding that lifestyle interventions including diet, moderate physical activity and structured eating plan could reduce the risk by 60%. She called for consumption of more fibre among people with diabetes as it helps prevent stomach problems and lowers cholesterol. The country's Director General of Health Services, Dr. Tlhabi Moorosi called for the establishment of support groups among patients with non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Support groups give support to members, who are also able to share experiences and problems. 17 November 2004 |
