COURT DISCONTINUES SATURDAY SESSIONS

The Maseru Magistrate Court has decided to discontinue Saturday sessions with effect from last  weekend, following obstacles that disrupted the proceedings.

A Senior Prosecutor in charge of the Maseru District, Mr Khabane Ntsamai, said the obstacles include a low turn up of witnesses and the accused who are on bail, apparently because weekends are days on which burial ceremonies are held, and numerous festivities.

He indicated that, even court officials, witnesses and the accused who came to court on Saturdays, complained about Saturday Court sessions, which they said were not only unusual, but also inconvenient.

Mr Ntsamai disclosed that, there were six magistrates who turned up in court last Saturday, and that five inquests on murder, were worked on,  whereas on June 26 when the sessions were launched, only two magistrates turned up.

" On the first day, 10 inquests were worked on. A total of forty inquests were to be worked on, during the Saturday Court session," he explained.

A decision to hold Saturday court sessions, that were tentative, were aimed at dealing with backlog of cases, of especially Preparatory  Examinations (PE's) and inquests of murder cases. The PE's and inquests are  seldom held, during normal working days.
