Basotho and the rest of the Southern African region are happily witnessing
the return of tranquility, peace and reconciliation, including the pledge to
fully commit themselves to the Lusaka protocol, King Letsie III has said.
receiving the letters of credence of the new Angolan Ambassador, Mr. Maria Francisco Dos Anjos at the Royal Palace in Maseru on July 1, the King said the region has followed with keen interest political developments that have been unfolding in Angola over the last few decades. People had been highly disturbed by the untold loss of human life and distribution of poverty that had been taking place. The King said in 2002 the Angolan government and the opposition parties got together and committed themselves to fully implement the Lusaka Protocol as well as the memorandum of understanding of Luena, congratulating the government of Angola and the other stakeholders in their relentless efforts to consolidate peace and stability and for the preparations for holding of the general elections in the near future. "Being aware of the fact that peace and reconciliation are never complete without the repatriation of refugees and the resettlement of the displaced people, we are gratified to learn that the government of Angola has concrete plans in place for absorbing refugees who are mainly in the countries of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia and Zambia, " he said. Angola is endowed with abundant natural resources and at the same time, it is strategically positioned, adding that with peace now prevailing in Angola, there is confidence that these resources will be harnessed judiciously for the social and economic development of Angola. The government of Angola is laying the foundation for sustained economic growth and development of the country through the implementation of the infrastructure projects such as communications, water supplies, sanitation and roads construction. The country has also demonstrated unsuppressed leadership by tackling the challenges that face the region and by being in the forefront in the protection of the interests of the region and the African continent in the United Nations and other international fora. Ambassador Maria Francisco Dos Anjos, in his turn, said the Angolan government is committed to the settlement of the populations that were displaced by the war and is prepared to meet the challenges of the national reconciliation. He said the rehabilitation of the communication routes, of the sanitation and water supply infrastructures of the population are the great priorities for which the people rely on the support of the member nations of SADC. Angolans are convinced that
Lesotho can also participate in the reconstruction process via its
entrepreneurial sector that would be interested in investing in Angola, the
new Ambassador said. |
