ATM FRAUD ON THE RISE

The Managing Director of Standard Bank/ Lesotho Bank 1999, Mr. Dave Allan says the bank is aware of the growing incidence of Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) fraud and are constantly engaging their staff
to be alert to potential losses.

Addressing members of the media during a meeting held at Lancers Inn in Maseru on Wednesday, Mr. Allan explained that the most frequent autobank (ATM) crime in Lesotho is stealing of autobank cards by people close to the account holder such as family members and friends who gain access to both the autobank card and the pin number with/without the account holder's consent..

He therefore, warned account holders to take all the necessary safety measures for their autobank cards since the machines (ATMs) could not establish if the user is the account holder or not.

He indicated that the Bank is further looking for ways to make banking easier and are planning to install even more machines in Maseru once suitable premises can be found. Not only are they installing ATM machines in strategic locations throughout the country, but they are also in the process of addressing the perennial problems of long queues during peak hours.

"We now have an Autobank present in almost every district in Lesotho, you can now access funds from practically wherever you are in the country, which means that account holders are given freedom to bank even in remote places" he indicated.

Mr. Allan indicated that the bank has also reviewed and enhanced their range of products to meet the needs of the customers, adding that lately they are offering a tailored loan scheme for customers who are in receipt of a regular monthly salary.

The standard bank/media meeting is held annually since last year to keep the media abreast of activities of the bank, and to provide a forum for discussion on issues that might arise regarding services offered by the
bank.
