Employees should be free to
communicate their needs through open dialogue and employers should have "
..the effective recognition of this right to collective Bargaining." The
United Nation Development Programme (UNDP) acting Resident Representative
Mr. Ernest Fausther said this at the end of workshop on Collective
Bargaining and Productivity, at Lesotho Sun on Thursday. Mr. Fausther said
technology, training, knowledge, skills development, legislation and policy,
play an important part in supporting enhanced productivity and development.
In an
interview, the Lesotho Federation of Democratic Union's (LFDU) Head of
Economic and Research Department Mr. Marake Makhetha said the workshop was
fruitful as the issue of collective bargaining promotes the spirit of
developing sound relations, which are a prerequisite for industrial peace.
Some
of the Trade Union representatives interviewed said this workshop said it
was educative as it created awareness between the parties in the world of
work in that if both parties communicate their ideas, it would
contribute towards improved productivity. They said the workshop was
educational and helpful hence it would
be best if it becomes a process not an event, as productivity needs a series
of initiatives. The two-day workshop was attended by senior government
officials, employers and trade union representatives.
