PRESS RELEASE; SEMINAR ON OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT

PRESS RELEASE

The Ministry of Employment and Labour will hold a half-day seminar on the Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems on the 26th February, 2003.

The objective of the seminar is to sensitize employers and managers on the importance of having a system and policies aimed at protecting workers from occupational hazards and risks while improving productivity .

The Labour Code obligates an employer to ensure as far as is reasonably practicable, safety , health and welfare of workers at work.

Furthermore the employers are obliged to provide and maintain a safe and healthy system of work. Without adoption of a comprehensive/holistic system of managing occupational hazards , and controlling risks, industrial accidents and work -related illnesses will continue to plague our workplace.

Recently, the 'Muela Hydropower Station of the- Lesotho Highlands Water Project reached a commendable achievement by obtaining a 4 star grading under the NOSA -OSH System. This is a commendable effort, hence all especially large and medium-sized companies are encouraged to learn from this Station.
