A local non-governmental organisation, Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Lesotho is to participate in the Bonn, Germany international conference on renewable energy scheduled for early 2004, according to PELUM Lesotho coordinator, Mr. Moshe Ts'ehlo. According to Mr. Ts'ehlo, as civil society organizations they have agreed that it is only through renewable energy initiatives that climate change can be controlled. The conference has been prompted by failure for developed countries to commit themselves in the areas of renewable energy, he said. The conference is a follow up to the United Nations Framework on the Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC) conference held recently in Milan, Italy and will address energy issues with specific focus on developing countries. Mr. Ts'ehlo said it was civil society's belief that the use of renewable gas could go a long way towards reducing the amount of harmful gases that have been proved to affect world climate change.
Conference hosts Germany is particularly suited because of its integrated
renewable energy projects, and hopes to share and lobby other countries to
have similar projects introduced, Mr. Ts'ehlo said. |
