AFRICAN UNION SUMMIT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL-PRIME MINISTER
 

The Prime Minister Mr. Pakalitha Mosisili, says the first extra-ordinary summit of the African Union (AU) has been successful as it has approved amendments to the AU Constitutive Act, which will help to reinforce and strengthen the AU as an organisation.

The Prime Minister told the press upon his arrival at Moshoeshoe I airport from Ethiopia, where he took part at a two day summit from Monday 3rd February,2003 . He said, he was mostly contended about the approval of an amendment on the establishment of the peace and Security Council.

Mr. Mosisili  indicated that this council is going to work on promotion of peace and stability in the African continent by way of solving conflicts among member states of the AU and conflicts within each member state.

Other approved amendments, which he spoke about involved removal of words that sounded discriminative and biased against women, to make the act highly gender sensitive, and adoption of Kiswahili and Spanish as other official languages of the AU.

The purpose of the summit was to consider amendments proposed to the AU Constitutive Act, by the AU executive Council.
