WOMEN AND LAW IN SOUTHERN AFRICA (WLSA) TO MEET SOUTHERN AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY (SADC) COUNTERPARTS

The Women and Law in Southern Africa (WLSA) Lesotho will meet their Southern African Development Community (SADC) counterparts at a five- day meeting to be held at Maseru Sun early next month.

According to WLSA's National Coordinator Mrs Keiso Matashane-Marite, the aim of the meeting is to discuss and finally agree, on how women in the SADC region could best celebrate the sixteen days of activism against gender violence. She mentioned that in the past three years, each and every country has celebrated the sixteen days of activism differently, adding that they have this year decided to have a common celebration, which will have a great impact on the communities who are not yet sensitized on gender violence, especially against vulnerable women and children.

She further clarified that while in the past the sixteen days were commemorated in the two districts of Maseru and Mohale's Hoek, this year WLSA intents to have representation across the country for wider coverage of the message they intend to convey. She concluded by mentioning that while many women and children become
victims of abuse by the day, most victims still  fear to report culprits, saying that this causes culprits to repeatedly  commit the same crimes. Meanwhile, WLSA has been marking the sixteen days of activism against gender violence annually since 2000.
