WORLD FOOD PROGFAMME (WFP) FINALISES LIST OF PEOPLE ENTITLED TO FOOD ASSISTANCE
 
The World Food Programme (WFP) has finalised a list of the most needy people who have lost their crops this year and areentitled to the food assistance to be provided by WFP.In an interview with Lesotho News Agengy LENA, the Deputy Country Director for WFP in Lesotho,Mr. Viney Jain, said a number of people, who were identified to receive food assistance is 444,800 people living in three hard hit districts of Qacha's Nek, Quthing, and Mohale's hoek.


The WFP deputy country Director indicated that they have also been notifiedthat the food assistance consignment would arrive in Durban, Republic of South Africa on Monday next week, and then delivered to Lesotho after two days.He maintained that "As soon as the food is available then the distribution would start immediately" The assistance will be initially for a period of three months and this assistance is a continuation of WFP's assistance to those affected by crop failure in 2001." He added.

Meanwhile, the WFP is to hold a meeting in Quthing with the three Districts Secretaries of the Qacha's Nek, Quthing and Mohale's Hoek on Thursday. Mr. Jain pointed out that the meeting is aimed at making logistics arrangements towards food distribution in those districts, and ensure their safety.
WFP is the United Nation's front line agency in the fight against global hunger. In 2001, WFP fed more than 77 million impoverished people in 82 countries including Lesotho.
