A VOTERS' ROLL FOR THE LESOTHO YEAR 2002 GENERAL ELECTIONS RELEASED - SECOND LIST - |

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of Lesotho has released and displayed the second voters' lists in all the registration centres countrywide - from Friday, January 18, 2002 to Sunday, January 27, 2002 for voters to check whether or not the mistakes of the initial list have been properly corrected. The IEC has noted that, the second lists include transfers of people who had indicated that they would like their names to be transferred to other centres; adding that, the names of people who have died, these are, those who died after the close of the registration period have been deleted. The voters who did not check their names during the first display from 26 November, 2001 to 10 December, are encouraged to go-check and make corrections where need be. The IEC held a three-day consultative meeting beginning Friday, January 18, 2002 for representatives of political parties registered with it, church leaders, chiefs, teachers- represented by their two main organisations in Lesotho namely, the Lesotho Association of Teachers and the Lesotho Teachers Trade Union, the voter education consultative committee, the NGOs, the Independent Political Authority (IPA), the Ministry of Education through the Department of Curriculum Development and everybody who has a stake in the elections. The meeting was on the Mixed-Proportional Representation (MPR) method of elections that is going to be used for the first time in Lesotho with this year general elections; to build the same understanding of the MPR among the stakeholders and to discuss the manual voter education material that is going to be used with the elections. |
