UNICEF HOLDS CONSULTATION WORKSHOP ON ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDREN
 


The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with the government of Lesotho, is currently involved in a  a consultation workshop at Christ the King High School which started on  from Monday 28 October, 2002 and scheduled to end on Thursday A press release from UNICEF shows that the objective is to reach a consensus on the way forward with regard to coordinated care and protection of orphans and vulnerable children.

The UNICEF press release  has also specified that the main purpose is to reach a common understanding on the situation of orphans and vulnerable children and to develop mobilization and coordination strategies for scaling up of a national response on these children. It added that the workshop is also intended to foster participation of orphans and vulnerable children in all decision-making processes on the issues that affect them.

Topics to be discussed include: the role of traditional leadership on orphans and vulnerable children, experiences dealing with them, and childrenlegislation process.Some speakers will include: the Principal Chief of Bela-Bela, Chieftainess 'Mantoetsi Lesaoana Peete, Dr Itumeleng Kimane representing the Law Reform Commission, Mrs. Evelyn Letooane who will talk about the role of police on protection of orphans and vulnerable children and others. This is the first national consultation on orphans and vulnerable children.
