POLLING OFFICERS TO UNDERGO TRAINING

Polling officers of the 37 polling stations in Mount Moorosi constituency will undergo a one-day training to be held at the Mountain Side hotel on Saturday 17 August,2002.  In an interview, the Quthing registration supervisor, Mrs Neo Mphiri said the training is meant to equip participants with skills to undertake the upcoming elections that will take place on August 24-2002 . She said the training workshop will cover, responsibility of polling, presiding and counting officers, sensitivity of elections and improvement of relations of workers including party agents.

She said the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has organised the workshop because of the mistakes experienced in the past general elections, adding that the mistakes included the locking of elections' results into ballot boxes before they could be announced. She further said such mistakes hinder announcement of elections results on time, thus arousing anxiety amongst voters.

At least nine political parties have registered with the IEC to contest the
Mount Moorosi constituency elections. The parties include the Basotholand
African Congress (BAC), the Basotholand Congress Party (BCP), the Basotho National Party (BNP), the Christian Democratic Party (CDP), the Lesotho Congress for Democracy (LCD), the Lesotho People's Congress (LPC), the Marematlou Freedom Party (MFP), the Popular Front for Democracy (PFD) and Sefate Democratic Union (SDU).
