The Minister of Home Affairs Mr. Mopshatla Mabitle welcomed newly recruited members of staff who were beginning their work in the Passport Production Unit(PPU) of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday 10, April 2002. All the 15 new members of staff have been trained in the use of computers and will replace the staff that was removed from the PPU last year because of their unsatisfactory performance and alleged corruption. The employment of the new staff follows immediately after the purchase by the Ministry,of several new computers and other equipment which will be used by the new contingent of staff as part of the continuing effort by the Ministry to improve service to the public, particularly to eliminate the current long delays in the production of new passports required by the public. In his welcoming remarks, the Minister said he expected the new members of staff to serve the public with courtesy and dedication and to respect the rules and regulations in executing their duties. He said in their new important assignments, they have a good opportunity of developing their careers in the civil service if they perform to the best of their abilities because the management of the Ministry is determined to reward performance while at the same time dealing seriously with inefficiency and corruption. Minister Mabitle said the predecessors of the new officers have had to be removed from their positions due to this kind of weaknesses and the same would happen to them if they imitate their predecessors. Mr. Mabitle said there was need in the past to seek KPMG Firm of Forensic Auditors to investigate the situation in PPU and that efforts are now underway to bring before the courts of Law those who will be found guilty of corruption. |
