MOSHOESHOE 1 AIRPORT  PREPARES ITSELF FOR MORE AIR TRAFFIC

A mock-exercise depicting emergency and life saving measures to rescue lives from a burning aircraft was held at the Moshoeshoe I airport on Monday 05 August, 2002.
A press release from the Ministry of Public Works said the acting Fire Chief Officer at Moshoeshoe I airport where the mock-exercise was held, Mr Litsie Nts'ekhe said it was necessary to hold the exercise as the airport gears itself for more air traffic in the near future.

The release said Mr Nts'ekhe said the exercise was successful because most stakeholders involved in emergency and rescue operations such as the Ministry of Health, the Air wing of the Lesotho Defence Force, the Disaster Management Authority (DMA), the departments of Immigration and Passport Services, Customs and Excise, Traffic Police, the National Security Services and the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) witnessed the exercise.

It added that he however complained about some stakeholders who reacted late as some services arrived an hour or two after the alarm rang even though the airport is only 13km away from Maseru. In the press release Mr Nts'ekhe commended the Mafeteng government hospital ambulance service, which arrived at Moshoeshoe I airport in less than one hour even though it had travelled more than 60km.

Mr. Nts'ekhe appealed to all road users to give way to emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire brigades when they hear a siren, as those vehicles would be on the way to save lives. Moshoeshoe 1 airport is preparing itself to a cargo-handling airport starting this spring whereby agricultural products from South Africa and Lesotho to overseas markets will pass through.
