MINISTER APPEALS TO MINEWORKERS TO BE FAITHFUL TO AVOID HIV

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohlabi Tsekoa has appealed to Basotho mineworkers working in South Africa and those waiting to be employed in the mines to be faithful to their spouses so as to curb the increasing number of orphans due to HIV/AIDS. The Minister was addressing more than 500 people waiting for employment at  the TEBA offices in Maseru during a march against HIV/AIDS by the staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs which started from the Pitso Ground to the Border Post and ended at Maseru Sun Cabaņas on Friday 13 December,2002.

He urged them to be open to each other, to their colleagues and to their children about the disease as that will help reduce the spread of the disease when people share helpful information. He advised all to use condoms adding however that the best way of avoiding HIV/AIDS is by abstaining.

The TEBA Manager, Mr. Sechaba Rapeane echoed the minister's words and warned the men against women who visit the mines to make money out of sex trafficking and advised them to avoid such women and be faithful to their families as that will save them from being infected by HIV/AIDS. The march also paused at the border post to sensitise local and mineworkers entering through the border post on HIV/AIDS pandemic. The march was joined by representatives from resident Diplomatic Missions.
