MINISTER OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL WELFARE  OFFICIALLY OPENS  PRIMARY HEALTH CARE PLANNING (PHCP) WORKSHOP

 


The Minister of Health and Social Welfare Dr. Motloheloa Phooko has emphasised the importance of having a collective responsibility between Health professionals and the Minister's office. Officially opening a one week workshop on primary health care planning for  health officials at Lesotho Sun Hotel on Monday 23 September,2002,  Dr. Phooko reminded the participants about the commitment of the government in the
implementation of the manifesto which was articulated to the electorate during the electioneering campaigns.

Dr. Phoooko sighted the core business of the  Ministry of health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) as to improve longevity and quality of life of Basotho to enable them to lead a healthful and productive life. He observed that through the provision of quality health and social services, accessible and affordable by all, the milestone for health for all could be realised. He also highlighted that through Primary Health Care strategy interventions directed to the community will make most impact in the improvement of the health of most Basotho.

The Minister further pointed out that central to community empowerment in health issues is Health Promotion. He said through Health Promotion positive behavioural change can be attained. He explained that he was aware of the shortcomings in health care delivery adding that  there is manpower shortage and transport, which will be
addressed in due course as a priority.

The Minister concluded by urging the health officials to respond to the challenges of HIV/AIDS, immunisations, poverty, orphans and malnutrition that are heavily affecting the health of Basotho, by drawing appropriate strategies that are well targeted. The main objective of the workshop is to update knowledge on developments within the health and social sector, participatory analysis on health structures and to outline main challenges, problems, needs and identify health priorities.

The workshop is attended by health officials from central and district levels from MOHSW and Christian Health Association of Lesotho institutions countrywide.
