MICRO PROJECTS CONTRIBUTE TO ECONOMIC GROWTH - TS'EOLE

The Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Cooperatives and Land Reclamation Mr. Molise Ts'eole says the engagement of people on micro projects is a way of contributing to the country's economic growth. Officiating at a two day seminar of the societies under the Rural Finance and Enterprise Support Project (RF-ESP) held at Lesotho Sun Hotel on Wednesday 17 September,2002.  Mr. Ts'eole said it is through such projects that people are able to generate income for the subsistence of their families, saying the
practice should be extended to other members of the society.

The Assistant Minister stated that the participation of members of the societies on income generating projects serves as an indication that some members of the community have positively responded to the government's initiative to assist people by ways of fighting against poverty. He expressed need for people to engage in cooperatives, stating that it is when people are united that they can together solve their problems, particularly hunger, which he said was a disaster in the country.

Mr. T'seole  urged the participants to equip other members of the community with skills that they have acquired from RF-ESP in order to discourage the habit of not producing, but only waiting for donations from out side the country.

Speaking at the same occasion, the RF-ESP Coordinator Mrs. 'Mahlokomelang Matlotlo said the main objective of the project is to change people's lives to better conditions. She pointed out that, this is done through the training that is offered to
people to equip them with knowledge of project formulation as well as project management as a way of assisting members of the community to have sustainable income generating projects.

The Rural Finance and Enterprise Support Project was established in 1995 with the aim of fighting against hunger and poverty in the villages by helping people with skills to improve means of income generation. The project exists in five districts of the country, which are: Butha-Buthe, Leribe, Berea, Maseru and Quthing whereby the societies in such districts are engaged on micro projects like poultry, piggery, carpentry, field and garden cropping.
