MCKINNON URGES MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TO BE LOYAL TO ALL | |
|
The visiting Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Mr Donald Charles McKinnon has urged members of the Lesotho Parliament to recognise their presence in the parliament as not to serve only the people who elected them to the parliament but to represent the opinions of all the people of Lesotho. Addressing the Parliament on Friday, as part of his two-day official visit in the country, Mr McKinnon made the Parliamentarians aware that the people of Lesotho have put them in the Parliament not just to reflect public opinion, but mainly to make judgment on issues that affect the people. The Secretary-General advised them to take their duties as Parliamentarians seriously to ensure development of stronger and more effective democracy in the country adding that all the political leaders must be equally committed to the development of the nation. He indicated that the Commonwealth is glad to see that Lesotho has moved to a new structure of Parliament, the Mixed Member Proportion Parliament. He advised the Parliament to take advantage of the new structure to remove problems that existed in the last structure of parliament. He congratulated those who contributed in solving the problems which immerged after the 1998 elections. In response, the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Lesao Lehohla thanked Mr.
McKinnon on behalf of the Parliament for the time he spared to be in the
