Lesotho to Attend a Conference on Aviation Security   -   February, 2002

A delegation from the Ministry of the Public Works and Transport, (MOPWT), comprising its Minister, Mofelehetsi Moerane; Principal Secretary for the Ministry, Monyane Mathibeli and the Director of the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Ketso Moeketsi, is to attend a high level Ministerial Conference on Aviation Security at the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) of the United Nations, Montreal, Canada from 19 to 20 February, 2002.

Lesotho as member of the ICAO is to re-affirm her commitment to Aviation Security, now that the forms of terrorism - Osama Bin Laden Style - emerge.  This re-affirmation will force Government of Lesotho to up-grade personnel and machinery at Moshoeshoe I International Airport - the only International Airport in Lesotho -, to meet new challenges.

In an interview by the Information Unit of the MOPWT, on whether or not  any country can undergo this new form of terrorism, where aircrafts are used to destroy lives and property, the Director of the DCA, Mr. Moeketsi responded that, it is possible for any unsatisfied party in any competition to resort to terrorism, more so, as highjackings and the like are out-dated and new forms of terrorism emerge.

The Montreal - February 2002 Conference is a result of one resolution of the 33rd Assembly of the ICAO, held 23 October, 2001 to 07 November, 2001, Montreal;  it charged its Aviation-Security Panel with re-enforcing the safety and security of the International Civil Aviation, following the tragic events of September, 11 2001, in New York and Washington D.C.
