The visiting Indian army chief of staff Major General S.K. Jamwal has urged
senior officials of the Lesotho Defense Force (LDF) to use the professional
approach of giving orders to their subordinates. Speaking at Makoanyane
Barracks on Monday 23 September,2002 Major General Jamwal said it is through
effective management that the army could become strong so that it could be
respected by its nation as well as other nations.
He said effective communication between senior officers
and junior officers as a fundamental tool that should be used in order to
make orders that can be obeyed by junior officers. "It is easy to drive
soldiers to accomplish a task, but it is more
challenging to lead them", he added. He emphasized that the role of the
army in every country is to ensure that peace and stability are maintained,
adding that they could only be maintained if the army is well trained.
Major General Jamwal said the equipment management
forms a crucial part of good management for senior officials, saying it
could enable them to be sure as to what kind of the equipment they would
need for a certain operation, basing themselves on the location where the
operation should be carried out. Major General Jamwal further recommended
that members of the Lesotho Defense Force participate at peace keeping
missions that are conducted under the United Nations, saying that could add
more experience in their field of security.
He further commended the establishment of the LDF Sand
Model Room that was
constructed by LDF Combat Engineers in collaboration with the Indian Army
team, stating that it shows co-operation between the two armies. He pointed
out that the LDF sand model room would help the army to draw a plan of their
operation without actually going to the place and as a result save
resources. Major General Jamwal also went on a tour of the Makoanyane
Hospital, Military Intelligence Training School and also watched the
training of troops carried out under the supervision of the Indian
Army team.
