The Lesotho Blood Transfusion Services (LBTS) has indicated that the
quantity of blood that they collect from voluntary blood donors throughout
the country is not enough to supply all the hospitals in the country.
In an interview, the Blood Donor Attendant at the LBTS, Mrs. 'Matsenoli
Thaele told LENA that many people in the country seem to be very reluctant to
donate blood and that is the reason why LBTS may not be able to supply enough
blood to all the hospitals in Lesotho. The LBTS Blood Donor Attendant
therefore said she would like to make a special appeal to all Basotho to
volunteer and donate blood in order to save the lives of the sick people in
hospitals who may need blood donations.
Mrs. Thaele further explained that most of the blood donations that they get,
comes from students around the country. She said the LBTS visits secondary
and high schools in all the districts of Lesotho every week to collect blood
from the students that provide blood donations.
The Blood Donor Attendant went on to show that the students seem to be
the only reliable donors that supply LBTS with blood while the adults appear
to be reluctant to donate blood. Mrs.Thaele claimed that they collect blood
from students when schools are open and it is during the long vacations that
LBTS runs short of blood. Meanwhile, LBTS will be visiting Siloe High School
in Mohales'hoek on Monday 26 August, 2002 to collect blood from the
students and teachers.
