HELVETAS BRINGS THEATRE PRODUCTION TO LESOTHO

The Helvetas Lesotho, Art House Association and Nawao productions of Switzerland, are engaged in a collaborative effort to bring to Lesotho a theatre production by the renowned playwright Wole Soyinka.

Speaking at a press conference held at UNESCO hall on Thursday, the producer of the play titled ‘King Baabu, Mr. Nigg Popp said the play is a satirical attack on despotic rulers who abuse power, a problem that Africa in particular seems incapable of shaking free of.

Mr. Popp indicated that the play also dwells on effects of dictatorships, tyranny, obsession with power, greed and misuse of religious influence by individuals. He added that it ridicules the political collaborators and populace for failing to check and correct misrule in their countries.

He indicated that they found it prudent to bring the show to Lesotho as the country also suffered military dictatorship during the military regime. He added that they are hoping that the play will held Basotho to deal with the burden and sufferings of the past in a more positive manner.

The Helvetas Programme Director, Mr. Gial Nicolay expressed delight about the opportunity they got in bringing the theatre production to Lesotho. He indicated that as an organizations that deals with promotion of culture, they are convinced that the show is a cultural activity which has a great potential of bringing positive developments to the lives of the people.

It is envisaged that the show will take place at the national convention centre on September 17.
