The government of Germany officially presented food assistance totalling
more than M4 Million to the Lesotho Red Cross
Society
as its intervention to the human suffering in Lesotho which has been brought
about by the prevailing food shortage in the country. At the presentation ceremony which was held at Lesotho Sun on Tuesday, the German Ambassador to Lesotho, Ms Anna Margaret Peters said the assistance which is in the form of Seeds, agricultural tools and food items is intended to prove that Germany is a friend in deed to Lesotho. She indicated that with agricultural tools the government of Germany wishes to assist Lesotho to be able to start cultivating land in preparation for future food crises. She expressed hope that their help will alleviate many problems affecting the people of Lesotho especially the most vulnerable. Speaking on behalf of the government of Lesotho and the Lesotho Red Cross Society, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohlabi Tsekoa said they were grateful and thankful to receive the assistance. He indicated that it was mostly appreciated because it did not just end where people were just given food to eat at that time but it went further to assist the people to move towards self-sufficiency so that they would not beg forever. The Minister further indicated that it is not only the responsibility of the government and the Red Cross Society to ensure that the problem of famine is overcome in the country but it requires all the people to realise the magnitude of the problem so that they all feel committed to ensuring that everybody moves towards a better life. The assistance is going to be distributed to the people of Mokhotlong, Butha- Buthe, Leribe and Berea by the society. 22 October, 2002 | |
