The establishment of the environmental recycling centre in Teya-teyaneng
will assist both the office of the town clerk and the urban board to control
waste material in town. This was agreed at a meeting on waste management
amongst the departments of
environment, town clerk and urban board members, which was held at the
district secretary office on Tuesday 17 September,2002. The participants
indicated that in order to keep the environment clean, they will have to
organise public gathering on environment tidiness in the villages, as most
people do not see the importance of cleaning the surroundings.
Speaking at the meeting, the waste management specialist for the department
of environment, Mrs. 'Masechaba Thamae said her office will engage ten youth
in the cleaning of the town to help the office of the town clerk. She
further said the youth would also be trained to produce hats, table mats,
decorating products out of used cans, papers and plastics to reduce
unemployment. Speaking on behalf of a Member of Parliament for Teya-teyaneng,
Mr Mafa Mafa congratulated the department of environment, saying its
approach was excellent as it enabled all the concerned parties to take part
in planning.
The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, through the environmental
management for poverty reduction trains youth on environmental protection
and project management. The project was formulated in 1996 with the aim to
assist communities to implement sustainable plans on environmental
protection, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
