| COMMISSIONER RAISES CONCERN ABOUT JUDICIARY SYSTEM | |
|
Briefing the press about the conference, at the Police Headquarters in Maseru on Wednesday 30 October,2002 the Commissioner of Police Mr. Jonas Malewa indicated that the police service is committed to the protection of the public and it is engaged in a vigorous fight against crime to ensure the safety of the public but the courts of law seem to be working in favour of the criminals which the police work hard to bring before them. He pointed out that the police do not have any problems with the government and the parliamentary system because they are producing good laws but their main concern is with the courts of law which are the ones which interpret the laws because their interpretation does not satisfy them as police. To emphasize this, he gave examples of cases where the police had managed to arrest some of the most dangerous criminals but the courts decided to release them on bail saying this allows them to go back to the public to repeat their evil acts. However he said they are unable to challenge this situation because of "the independence of the judiciary". Other resolutions of the conference include to fight against corruption and human being trafficking, to work together to prevent cross border crime and to introduce information systems in all member countries for sharing of information and skills among the countries. 31 October,2002 | |
