ANNAN LAUNCHES INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF MOUNTAINS
 
The International Year of Mountains was officially launched at Ha  Mohale on Wednesday 28 August,2002 where two Aloe Africana trees were planted by both the visiting United Nations Secretary General Mr Kofi Annan and the Prime Minister Mr Pakalitha Mosisili.

Addressing those who had gathered there, Prime Minister Mr. Mosisili showed gratitude for Mr. Annan's  visit to Lesotho and said the visit was historic as the country has just immerged from the democratic process of elections which were not only transparent but peaceful. He said the United Nations family in Lesotho, was part of the democratic process as in 1998 they provided a neutral venue where all
political parties met to find a way forward after the political turmoil, adding that the general elections were a milestone in that process.

Mr Mosisili said currently the UN office in Lesotho and the government are working on a programme of deepening democracy in Lesotho and added that the government of Lesotho will appreciate the support of the United Nations in this regard. He also mentioned that Lesotho has embarked on a vigorous programme
in land reclamation and a forestation so that the mountains become clean again. He said Lesotho experiences the worst famine ever because of the rains that fell at the wrong time adding that people, especially those in the rural areas grow hungry every day. He also mentioned that Lesotho is engaged in  massive water harvest so that all the people have access to clean water.

In response, the UN Secretary General Mr Kofi Annan said he was concerned about the famine in Lesotho and would like to assist in any way possible. He said he was also encouraged to learn that Lesotho has taken serious steps to fight HIV/AIDS and will help in any way possible to strengthen the capacity. He said HIV/AIDS can be defeated if all join hands to tackle the scourge as it takes men and women at their prime time who are expected to contribute in the development of  the country. Also present at the occasion were some cabinet Ministers.
