PARTICIPATION IN AGRICULTURE  BEST FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION

Participation in agricultural activities and environmental protection could assist communities to achieve the goals of National Vision 2020. This was said by participants of a one-day workshop on development of national vision 2020, which was held in Teyateyaneng on Tuesday 03 September,2002

Participants, said that for the Berea community to achieve the goal of vision 2020, there is need to re-visit legal procedures, and apply new practices in land allocation in the district, which they said  has to be practiced accordingly to avoid conflicts amongst communities, adding that assistance of farming equipment, fertilizer, and seeds from the government is needed. They indicated that this would help farmers to produce good quality food products.  They pointed out that prevention of chronic illness among people, especially youth is needed as to enable them to live longer, and to participate in the country's economic development.

Meanwhile, the National Vision 2020 committee member, Mrs 'Mathabiso Mosala
told Lesotho News Agency (LENA) that the information gathered by participants would be analysed to be included in the final consultation report to be issued. Mrs. Mosala further said the participants' contribution on development of National vision 2020 would be highly appreciated, as they know ways of improving their lives in the district. She pointed out that the first report of national vision 2020 was issued in
2000, while the second report, which is on village consultations level is underway.

Similar workshops have been held in Leribe, Thaba-Tseka, Mafeteng and Mohale's Hoek districts to gather different views.
