AFRICA 2000 NETWORK ASSESSES NEEDS

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Africa 2000 Network, is engaged in the assessment of the needs of the people living across the Senqu River in the Qacha's nek district.

Speaking in the meeting of Heads of Departments at the District Secretary's office on Tuesday, the National Coordinator for Africa 2000 Network, Mr. Tlhabeli Peshoane, said the Lebakeng Constituency is one of the places that are underserved and underprivileged in the Qacha's nek district as some of its areas are among other things, not accessible by road transport. He said, the people living in that area because of such problems, take more than one-day to get services from the Qacha's nek town, as they have to cross the river, which becomes full sometimes.

He said as a result, the residents pay heavy fares for boats to cross the river as those that belong to the government leaks, an incidence that nearly cost people lives last week, who had just received their donations from Aupolasi. In this incidence, the boat sank with maize meal, while the people narrowly escaped.

Mr. Peshoane indicated that one of the core needs of these people is the bridge that will make it easy for them to cross the Senqu River, and the construction of the road to various villages in the constituency. In response, the Regent in the office of the Principal Chief of Qacha's nek, Chief Halekhethe Makhaola showed that the bridge could be important to make life easier for the people living across the Senqu River. He said, the worst part is when they cross with the corpse, showing that some of the areas that are mostly disadvantaged are Nts'upe, Ha Mofutho, Libobeng and Lebakeng.

The Chief indicated that the people living across the river have an opinion that they are underserved because it is not easy to bring services next to them because of such problems. He therefore, called on Mr. Mapeshoane, through his office to help these
disadvantaged areas. Among others, the Network has supported the communities of the villages from Makhalong to Ha Noosi in Qacha's nek with hand tools to construct
feeder roads, clean water supply, and afforestation. The communities were given funds to purchase the equipment such as wheelbarrows, spades, hammers, chisels, crew bars and pick axes.
