DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE TO BE OBSERVED

Mohale's hoek community will hold a campaign to observe 16 days of activism against gender violence at Mohale's hoek race course on Thursday 05 December, 2002. In an interview, Coordinator of the Women and Law in Southern Africa, Mrs. Keiso Matashane-Marite, said the day's events are intended to discourage any form of violent practices against women and children. She said, the campaigns started on November 25 with various activities intended to disseminate information against gender violence and will end on December 10.

Mrs. Matashane-Marite indicated that 16 days of the campaigns include international days like day for no violence against women on November 25, World AIDS day on December 01, day for the disabled on December 03, anniversary for Montreal Massacre on December 06, and the International Human Rights Day on December 10. She said the goal is to link issues on HIV/AIDS and human rights with gender violence so that gender violence should be uprooted irrespective of people's status. Expected at the occasion include chiefs, community councilors, Public servants, children and the community.

Meanwhile, as part of 16 days of the campaign, a mobile workshop was conducted in a bus from Maseru to Qacha'snek, whereby the participants and passengers discussed and identified gender violence practices and were asked to ensure that such practices come to an end.
